Wow, I can't believe I didn't update this journal with the youtube video I made of my bedroom, finally completed back in March of this year (5 months ago).

I had fun making this video, after some fast and furious cleaning and decorating lol. I incorporated a bunch of ideas and concepts from my previous entry into this video and this wasn't even the final form, since I bought a bigger, prettier bookshelf to replace the flimsy Target bookcase. You have the nature cottagecore decorations and plants, fairy lights everywhere, the gallery wall of art from my favorite artists and franchises, the bright colors, and all of the beloved trinkets and curios set out instead of stuffed into boxes. Overall, I am so in love with my bedroom, it is colorful and magical and aesthetic and full of the things I love. The room is back to being a mess as usual after a few weeks, but at least the initial organization zones has helped a lot. I think continual laundry and makeup and getting knicknacks from conventions or in the mail constantly overwhelms me when it comes to staying neat and tidy. It's hard to stay on top of laundry and finding places for the onslaught of merch you keep buying to support small businesses in this capitalist hell. I will try to do it on the weekends though because umm... need that floor space to walk again.

Nothing has really changed anywhere else except for the seasonal change for my PC in my office, this time it was springtime in France with all of the beautiful flowers normally associated with France and Francis Bonnefoy from Hetalia. I included some new prints of Jeanne D'Arc and a lady at a hat shop as well as fanart and official merch of France. So far one of my favorite setups! I don't have a theme for this summer so I didn't change it back in June, lol. I guess I could have done Free and swimming again but I was debating working on that until I have a lot more inspiration and stuff to work with (like mermaids or blue flowers).

The living room finally has the acrylic art and fairy lights set on a little shelf with ivy vines framing it, but I want to replace it with a painted mural, like an arch showing the night sky behind it. I bought some paint samples but have been too lazy to practice painting my watercloset. I just think the vines are too wimpy looking, I need a lot more foliage to round it out, or just ditch it for something sleeker. I hung up a few more prints since the last update as well.

Have I cleaned or reorganized my office? No... lol. I do need to get on that and also finish cleaning the kitchen. But if there's one thing that's satisfying, it's vacuuming and then checking the container full of dust.

Interrupting the usual monthly or bi monthly or more monthly updates with a post explaining my weebcore room.

As you may recall (not that anyone is reading this) from my previous posts, I hesitated to find a place for all the anime merch that I bought back in my itabag days and my figure/doll collecting days and also from supporting small artists. For the longest time they were just stored in boxes and shelves, gathering dust not displayed to their prettiest and being eyesores instead of beautiful works of art. I didn't really want a weeb living room or guestroom since that's where my mom would be the most and didn't really want to give her a chance to criticize my taste (although there is videogame fanart in the guestroom and small figures and pokemon fanart in the living room.) My craft room is already completely full of sewing related wall art and I don't want a lot of distraction in the office side of my craft room. The dining room had space on the walls and the tiny corner shelf but it was already displaying regular paintings and souvenirs, I wanted to keep that same vibe. So that left my bedroom as the place to hold all my merch.

All this time, I didn't want to make my bedroom the weebroom because I wanted a calming zen spa-like space without a lot of visual clutter so I can get to sleep quickly. I have severe insomnia so every little bit helps. But with no other options, I said fuck it, and decided to go full maximalist in my bedroom. Life is short after all, and I feel the clammy hand of death on my shoulder.

I'm so glad I did. Even if it's a lot of visual clutter, I tried to make it look aesthetic and I think I succeeded (considering I messed up a few times with hammering holes in the wall lol). Does it distract me from sleep? Possibly, but not that much to take it down.

I included as many of my favorite decor features from influencers and celebrities and general vibes as I could while working on the redecorating. Here are some of them!

1. Anna Sui's apartment. A fashion designer I already admire whose Asian influence is also seen in her apartment which is full of bold colors and floral/animal patterns on the walls and museum-like furniture and favorite knick knacks on display.

2. Ghibli core. This is common with anime weebs and art school students, they are generally cottagecore aesthetics (natural cozy colors with handcrafted trinkets and plants scattered around) but with strong anime merch presence such as figures and blankets and plushies. Obviously I love Ghibli movies and they define my life and I also love the look of Howl's cluttered bedroom, therefore I like this style so much.

3. gallery wall in general. I want my bedroom to look like a salon room or h all at the Louvre with beautiful vibrant paintings and sculptures everywhere and a decorated ceiling and adorned windows. But all with anime merch lol. I've been to the Louvre so I need to refer to my photos for inspo.

4. Rachel Maksy and anyone like her. She is more specifically hobbitcore and retro, but I do also love Lord of the Rings. As far as I know, the social media influencers of her ilk are not that much into anime or Japanese games, so that is the main difference. They are all very natural and historically accurate; there is none of the bright, super saturated, rainbow/tropical colors that many anime series have in their home.

I watched a lot of youtube and looked at a lot of instagram and pinterest accounts for inspo, but what the Ghiblicore rooms lack is that they mostly focus on Ghibli, which I don't have a lot of merch for, and there isn't a lot of variety of anime or games on display, it's very curated and tasteful. Whereas full-on wall to wall anime merch or game rooms are very functional, sleek, minimalist and Ikea-like, with white and beige backgrounds and plain furniture so the various colorful merch pops.

I want a mix of the two - lots of color and nature and textures everywhere, all related to a bunch of different anime and game merch all at once, no taste or curation, all tackiness. My walls are white and my carpet is light cream so I can't avoid the greige curse, at least not without hours of work and the risk of falling from a ladder, but I really like the gallery wall and figure displays adding the color. I added as many fake flowers and vines as I could for the nature aspect, maybe even some live plants eventually. The room is still quite Ikea-like since I have a lot of Ikea furniture because I can't find anything better without costing thousands of dollars, but I incorporated soft feminine touches and accents in the textures. The main purchases I made were some prints and merch I was already going to buy before redecorating, picture frames and related gallery stuff from Michaels and Daiso, shelves from Ross and Ikea, flowers from Michaels, and that's it. No new furniture or appliances. I tried to use coupons and be thrifty if I did have to buy new stuff, but mostly used what I already had.

Ideally, I will have a wallpaper or paint accent wall, or a diy mural even. I want colorful curtains (the only ones I have right now are cream/gold) and a vibrant fluffy moss rug although I do love my white shag rug so much. One day I will hang that pothos plant on the ceiling, but if I can squeeze in another houseplant and keep it alive, that would be awesome. I might need to get a bolder color of bedding as well. These all require big purchases (as well as effort) which I didn't want to do so that's why I listed them here so I can remember. Also the mannequin needs a cool outfit at all times, which is free to do and I will do that now. All in all, without having to invest a lot of money and effort, my weebcore room is basically finished!

Due to guests coming over for Christmas, I made so much progress and finally felt proud of myself! Let's summarize the last year and ten months first, and I will definitely return in April with a 2 year update.

My main goal with this style journey is to obviously get some aspect of my life in order after the pandemic started, but also record my thoughts and progress after getting inspired by crafters and influencers and irl acquaintances working on their own homes and personal style. I want my home to make me happy and relaxed after work, and since I'm not going out and traveling as much as I used to because of the pandemic, I don't have an excuse that I'm too busy to clean (except I do get busy lol). I haven't kept up with logging as much as I should since I tend to clean and decorate in a short burst after long periods of inactivity. But I finally found a system and philosophy that makes me happy in regards to tidying and decorating.

1. Use the stuff I hoard to decorate seasonally. I feel much more relaxed about acquiring fanmerch (to support artists in this troubled time) because I am switching things out quarterly, so eventually everything I own will get a chance to shine and make me happy to reminisce. I got this idea from reading Marie Kondo's second book, in which she suggests ways to respect things that still spark joy but seriously have no use in daily life (like knick knacks.)

2. Make small cleaning tasks a daily habit, focus on easy to achieve goals. I outlined this in my tumblr, but I love the idea of making your bed everyday, since the bed is such a huge component of your room, therefore a neat bed is a huge stress relief and also healthy for you. Cleaning as you cook or setting 10 minutes after your work to clear up your workspace are 2 other habits I'm trying to incorporate.

3. Disregard all styling by influencers, but celebrate their progress (even if it's a little jazzed up for an audience) and celebrate my own progress like I'm one of them, too!

All right, now back to the room by room update, which I'm excited to log. If you don't remember, I wanted to have different themes for each room of my house, so it is eclectic, but life is short.

Lol, I keep forgetting to post my accountability posts each month, but no worries, I also forgot to draw 1 drawing each month or do my fashion posts. I wish I had an excuse but I don't. I'm just lazy and avoidant. However, I did make some progress with decor and I'm excited to share!

1. Guestroom/bathroom/front entryway: still a hot mess of random stuff moved in from other rooms

2. Dining room: still got random stuff and decor that needs to be moved into their forever homes, plus a lot of shipping boxes that need to be recycled or tossed.

5. Mudroom and laundry room: in my defense, I did organize some shipping stuff that was in the closet there... but otherwise no changes. Need to donate/toss these shoes and move the ladder back out into the garage.

6. Office/craft room: inspired by office/studio renovation videos on youtube, I bought more storage containers on sale at the craft store or from Daiso but have yet to come up with the perfect solution since I have to maneuver around the futon. I thiiiink I will clean up the huge mess made from working on my genshin cosplay and start reorganizing/konmari from there. I just have so many small craft supplies that a huge shelving unit is silly but the small shelves I already aren't being used to their max either.

7. Kitchen: I replaced more shelf liners and bought metal shelf dividers to stack more items. It looks a little better but the pantry is still overflowing and disorganized, I really just need a bigger pantry. I also took out the bottom fridge shelves for a much needed deep cleaning. I still need to deep clean the stove and oven, take out the recycling and junk mail and work on my plant setup that is still burdened with dying plants and seeds that never sprouted. Despite cleaning other spots in the kitchen, I deliberately skip the most difficult areas lol.

8. Home office: I actually redecorated my PC setup for summer... in August lol. I didn't add much functionality besides a stand for my tablet and a new My Melody container for electronics, but I cleaned the upper cabinets so to make space for shipping envelopes (not that I work on my online shop that much). Left to do: organize my shop merch better, clean out my projects cart, find a way to use the filing cabinets to store paperwork or just give up and put everything back on the desk like before.

9. Living Room: The old loveseat has been relocated so now there's a free area that is filled with junk lol. I want to buy an accent chair or recliner someday but that's not urgent since that would force me to clean up the living room to make space and I don't wanna. I'm actually trying to propagate my monstera and it seems to be working. I do have one more print to frame, that's the Castlevania family portrait of Dracula, although I guess I should hang that somewhere else in my house other than the living room.

10. Master bedroom/closet: I did finish the bed canopy! It's quite lovely decorated with flowers, gold foil sheer curtains and fairy (christmas) lights and hasn't fallen on my head yet lol. I also bought new bedding, a duvet cover and pillow cases from my fave Japanese fashion brand Liz Lisa. The fabric is actually not very comfortable, kinda scratchy compared to my higher end stuff, but it's soooo cute. I finally vacuumed the carpet which really needed it and bought a new laundry sorter, a shelving unit and one of those closet rod organizer thingies to replace/add to the storage. Everything looks so fresh and organized now even though I technically didn't do that much, so I really want to keep up that energy. My biggest task is trying to find a way to store purses and folded clothes that keeps them free of dust but easy to view.

So the biggest problem with my house is all the stuff in places that they aren't supposed to be in - storage boxes, junk containers, empty shipping boxes, papers and craft materials that were moved during my projects and then never moved back. After that, I need to hang some art and do some deep-cleaning/sanitizing of key areas in my kitchen and bathrooms. One day I will get around to painting the walls, but I need to organize/clean and maybe get some pest control in first!
alexithemia: (Default)
I forgot to post for March and April, both those months I was on vacation for a week and uhh... my brain got smooth. But some changes! Just gotta keep up this energy for May.

1. Guestroom/bathroom/front entryway: still no updates since February

2. Dining room: no updates or changes, but I got ants again, so I really need to look into that.

5. Mudroom and laundry room: also no changes, my bad.

6. Office/craft room: one change! I nailed a little spice rack from Ikea over my desk and put my buttons into the spice jars. I also tied a key holder to the rack so I can hang my scissors. Unfortunately while cleaning my desk, I moved my other sewing supplies around or set them on the floor so it's still as messy as before. But at least I am not losing track of my scissors?

7. Kitchen: I cleaned around my tea/cup area and replaced the cupboard liners (which I didn't know you were supposed to do periodically) with a nice thick grey marble padded liner from Lowe's. Still need to clean/replace liners for the pantry and other cupboards, deep clean the fridge and stove, take out recycling, take out the dead herbs I was trying to grow. I did replace 4 dead ceiling lights, though!

8. Home office: I finally got all my parts for gamer-hag setup! I nailed a cheap shelf from Target to hold some fake flowers and Pokemon merch, added vines to the cord for my Ikea paper star light for a cottage core look. I moved my pig painting over so I can look at my friends' art while on the computer, put a fandom poster where it used to hang, then hung/displayed more decoration (Inosuke from Demon Slayer, My Melody) all around. I bought a My Melody cable organizer for cable management and put my monitor on a pink monitor stand, consolidated random tech stuff into a repurposed basket container. Speakers replaced, pink bunny phone stand purchased, printer wheely cart bought and printer moved away, then I added light fixtures and fake flowers added for a spring time sakura look. I still haven't put back all of my paperwork that used to be stored here, but I did cram all of my tabling/artist alley merch into a storage bin for now, leaving out only current projects. Still to do: get a functioning file cabinet system (the filing cabinet that came with the house does not actually hold hanging folders!), consolidate my projects onto my wheely cart.

9. Living Room: the LEDs did not stick to my TV lol... I hung up some more Asian prints to match the plant vibe going on in the kitchen, had to buy odd-shaped frames at Michaels and Target for them. The biggest change here is my mom brought my old brown leather couch to her house and we purchased a new white/grey chenille chaise couch to match my decor better. The old loveseat is still there though lol. Half of the houseplants are thriving on their shelves here and in the kitchen, the other half died within weeks (also didn't help I was out of town for 6 days).

10. Master bedroom/closet: no updates since February. I tried to construct a canopy with sheer gold-foil-decorated curtains to hang flowers and lights from for a cozy fairycore look, but was too lazy to nail the hook into the ceiling over my bed.

I actually made less progress than expected but I made some progress considering how terrible this month has been.

1. I'm grouping the guestroom, guest bathroom and closet and front entry way. As mentioned, I still have some cleaning and fixing to do within the bedroom, and I just can't make myself work on the gallery wall since command strips don't work on my walls apparently. The donatables remain undonated after 2 years... I keep rummaging through the boxes for items to reuse but never reuse them!

2. Dining room: curtains and tools are still unfixed/left out, as well as the xmas tree and curtain backdrop, but I did break down the box of anime merch and brought the merch to display in my bedroom for now. As previously mentioned, I don't really want to keep my merch in my bedroom but I don't want to display them in my living room either. I'm still thinking about this, but so far the setup I have is sufficient for now.

5. Mudroom and laundry room: Umm... there's a ladder there now because smoke alarm battery needed replacing lol. But I managed to get through a stack of mail from last summer!

6. Office/craft room: I've been sorting through craft supplies every now and then but I still want to work on a better use of my space, possibly with shelves on the wall or over the door storage. I have old shelves I can use

Hmm... I seemed to have copied the previous month's entries for the next few sections and never updated them. Then I realized I didn't finish the entry and saved as a draft lol. Well, I'm publishing now for all of us to read!

I'm having a heck of a time with these accountability posts, lol. December was busy due to the holidays, but we canceled our swim classes so my weekends are a little more free again until February or March, depending on this omicron surge. My latest obsession is cleaning sink faucets with vinegar in a ziplock bag, it is just so satisfying watching all that gunk and buildup dissolve. I can't believe how much gunk builds up on the faucet, like how???

1. Guest bedroom: I have yet to fix the curtains or clean the closet, and still need to put away some decorations and random storage boxes, but I am moving on from this room and its bathroom/closet for now. It's tolerably clean for guests and that's all that's needed.

2. The front entry way: I still haven't made my gallery wall because I hate having to hammer holes in the walls especially if I change my mind later which is very likely. I have a phobia to commitment and decision-making, lol. I will try to print some photos before the end of the month though and also attempt donating/selling the big box of donatables.

4. Dining room: curtains/tools/merch still need to be fixed and tidied, and now I have to put away the tiny Christmas tree and curtain photo backdrop lol. My other project is working an a silk flower arrangement once I find the perfect vase, but that's not important or urgent.

5. Mudroom and laundry room: While I didn't do much cleaning in these specific areas, I am tidying up the rest of the house, which will eventually address the junk collecting in these two areas. I would like to sort through the mail before Chinese New Year at least.

6. Office/craft room: I want to work on this area last, but something I've been keeping in mind is trying to keep items in the same category together. This is where I want to keep all my arts and crafts and costumes. Is that possible? We shall see.

7. Kitchen: another problem area that I will leave second to last. I cook a lot and don't trust my dishwasher, so it gets messy quickly. But I sorted out my tea area again after getting even more tea pots and tea stuff

8. Home office: this has my art/gaming PC, which I want to redecorate and upgrade after seeing inspiration posts on Instagram lol. Waiting for parts and furniture to come in next week, very excited to rearrange this area for maximum aesthetic and productivity... I bought and want to buy a lot of pink gamer girl stuff, but I also want to keep the old-timey cottagecore grandma-kei vibe due to the traditional cabinets and granite desktop. Not sure I can combine those 2 different aesthetics, but that's a problem for future me.

9. Living Room: I want to hang up some more prints and artwork but custom frames are expensive and again, I don't want to hammer holes in the wall. This room has the Bohemian/Asian vibe. I moved a small plant shelf here to catch some sun and it looks nice. I may add some LEDs to the TV for backlighting but going to see if I want to add LEDs to my computer first or to backlight some acrylic prints I bought. Or I can just buy more LEDs I guess...

10. Master bedroom/closet: a continuous work in progress, but I tidied up my vanity and moved my nail stuff and extra skincare and makeup to a shelf nearby so everything is all in one place. I reorganized my jewelry and hair stuff armoire and tried to make a little merch and media area with book shelves from Target and Ikea. But I still am indecisive how to display excess merch. I want to keep almost all my merch in my bedroom, not my office or living room, due to not wanting the general living areas where my family might drop in to be full of merch and look messy or weeby. But then that means my bedroom would be full of visual clutter. I don't hang a lot of prints of people/characters in this room for that reason (only my 2 Jeanne d'Arc prints).

In my last post, I mentioned making a sunroom/conservatory area in my breakfast nook area of my kitchen. And I actually did make progress on this! My brother and friend got me some plant shelves to add to the 2 I bought from Pier Imports and Ikea and it looks not bad at all! I hung up some plant related art prints I got from artists at cons and through Etsy in the kitchen area. I would like to buy better seedling propagation items and get more houseplants to complete the jungle crazy plant lady look.

All right, I'm having serious problems staying on track these days on everything, from work to my hobbies to cleaning and self-care, but here is the latest monthly update. I was inspired after reading a few more chapters in Marie Kondo's second book about tidying up.

1. Guest bedroom: still need to put the last few things away and fix the curtain but at least everything is clean and vacuumed and laundered. We do not speak of the closet.

2. The front entry way: I am going to make an appointment regarding the ants someday soon, but I have to finish cleaning the inside of my house before then, doh. Still haven't donated stuff although I have listed a lot on ebay (instead of depop). I have yet to finish printing and framing photos although I was very tempted looking at new frames recently. I just don't have the self-discipline anymore.

4. Dining room: still haven't fixed the curtains or put away the tools/merch, but at least I put away the Halloween decorations. Time to pull out the Christmas decorations come December.

5. Mudroom and laundry room: Ok, I didn't use my staycation wisely because I did not work on these two rooms, but in my defense, I did work on the yard and garage, so it's sort of related. I promise by the end of this year, I will konmari the front of the house which is all 5 of these spaces.

In the meantime, I have been collecting a lot of photos on Pinterest, and I think my next big decoration goal after general tidying up is making a little sunroom/conservatory area in my kitchen for my plants to overwinter. The problem is I do eat in my breakfast nook (the sunniest area of my kitchen) and the rest of my house is carpeted outside of the bathrooms and front hallway, so I would have to scoot my table over if I am going to commit to a sunroom. I predict a lack of space will slow me down here.

If the sunroom idea looks like it won't work, then my next plan is to paint a mural in my bathroom/watercloset. I am planning on a landscape with forests and what not (to replace the sunroom), but that's for future me to figure out after the plant shelves come in.
alexithemia: (Default)
I haven't made much progress, this is just a post to keep myself on track and responsible.

1. Guest bedroom: still in the same state as before, haven't put away the cat painting or fixed the curtains, but now carpet needs extra vacuuming after my friends stayed for the weekend.

2. The front entry way: I planted a rose of sharon bush (not rose), which is actually an evergreen hibiscus. The monkey grass situation is still the same because ants have arrived on the scene, making it dangerous to dig up the grass, although I did try to neaten it whenever I got the chance. Unfortunately the hook for my wreath fell down in the humidity of a storm, so I have to stick up a new hook or get a wreath hanger for my wreaths. Still have to donate/sell some stuff! I also want to finish printing out photos so I can hang up a temporary gallery wall in the front hall, or maybe this white wooden rose medallion I got at Tuesday morning. Those are hanging out on the dining room table in the next bullet point...

4. Dining room: the curtain rod fell again, so I have to look up a better way to keep the screws in the wall. The tools and anime merch are still there lol. No other plans to add decorations or fix things, although I did buy a few Halloween related items at Daiso and Target and Michaels.

5. Mudroom and laundry room: no progress there either. The weather has cooled down significantly, high of 80 instead of 100, so I can't use the heat as an excuse to not clean. I will try to do the laundry room, the smallest of those rooms by the end of the month since I will have a staycation then. No excuses anymore!
alexithemia: (Default)
I made a tiny bit of progress! Here's what I did since the last entry, and now I am adding another two rooms after declaring the guest bathroom as finished as it will ever be.

1. Thanks to my bffs staying for the weekend to see friends and family before the pandemic takes that away again, I turbo-cleaned my house because they were also bringing their small dogs. The guestroom is now home to only decoration/souvenirs storage and old clothes/mementoes in the closet, the trash was uhh... moved to my office lol. The only thing left is moving the cat painting out somewhere else and fixing the curtains. I bought a ladder so I have no excuse anymore!

2. Guest bathroom is more or less done after I took out the trash.

3. The front entry way has no changes, except that I decided to buy a new expensive rose bush this week, instead of planting the mediocre lowest price point one that's on its last legs. I still need to rework the soil and take out the rest of the monkeygrass that used to be planted there. I hate monkeygrass so I'm glad I got most of it out. I also consolidated the donation/selling items in the front hall that still haven't been sold or donated, yikes.

4. As for the dining room, I did a quick repair of the curtain rod and tied the curtains with cheap Daiso cords. I may want to nail them to the side like how curtains normally look. I also hung up the peacock painting and set out my antique glass bottles on the decorative shelf. I still need to find a place for is the dried roses, maybe just put them in a bowl for now like potpourri. Also need to move the box of anime merch and all of my tools somewhere out of the way but still accessible. It might be a good idea to set up a tools area in my garage, but I like having my tools in the house instead of rummaging in a dimly lit garage and cutting myself.

5. New additions to my to-do list- mudroom and laundry room. Those rooms currently house some old clothes, donation/selling items, paperwork, boots and old shoes, a box of old toys, some outdated technology? I have a hard time letting go of stuff, because even though I haven't used these donatables for years, what if I need them for other purposes like for cleaning or cosplay??? This is the result of growing up poor and not having a lot of material goods to your name because they were shared with your sibling. I have to keep telling myself I have an income now and it would stress me out to have to move all this stuff with me, so I need to konmari them asap.
alexithemia: (Default)
I missed last month's entry but that's because I didn't do much. But here's an update so far...

1. The guestroom has not changed much, but I am doing some organizing in which I will one day take out the trash collected there. I hope to revisit with some old antique bottles gifted to me and put in some flowers. I hung up some floating shelves to place the themed postcards from my travels. Still need to fix the curtains sigh.

2. Guest bathroom now has an official themed floral plaque bought at 70% off from Joann's. I replaced the previous organizer tray with a cool bamboo-looking plastic grey basket that's slightly larger. Other than some greenery and cleaning up the closet, this room is almost done!

3. The doorway now has an official spring/summer wreath, a cheap ivy and white flower one from Target. In the front of the house, we have an urn with an almost alive gardenia, and lemon grass sort of growing in a pot (this was from the spring.) I recently planted some annual flowers in pink/purple and uprooted all of the dead bushes from the snowstorm. My plan is to plant this not-so-great rose bush where one of the bushes used to be, but I need to work the soil to give it a fighting chance against getting waterlogged lol.

4. The dining room is next. I bought a new beautiful white peacock painting from Marshall's to replace the cat painting. I love the cat but it doesn't quite go with my house lol. I might hang it up in the breakfast nook and make that my kooky area. Now I just need to hang the peacock painting and clean/fix the curtains.

I am hoping that I no longer need to buy anything else from big box stores, but I feel like I might need to grab another storage unit before I can swear that off. The goal is to either DIY or buy from local or indie businesses from this point forward... Again this is difficult because of postal prices increase and the pandemic limiting what I can order online without having to pay like $100 in shipping, but I am determined to make at least one thing myself from what I already own. I feel like that's doable. Other than that, I'm making progress with konmari and reorganizing everything with the intent of being able to move my house into a smaller apartment on a moment's notice, but not actually having to do so.
alexithemia: (Default)
One month after my first style transformation post, I have pinned down some concepts that I want to use. I was really inspired by Rachel Maksy's youtube channel, in which she makes over her sunroom and her basement and mentioned that she had ideas or themes for each room, as if her house was a museum with each room having a different era or concept. And that helped me in my dilemma of having too many interests going on at once, I don't have to necessarily give up any item this way, it just will go into each separate room where it fits in better. (Although I should still clean out the junk and make donations if needed.)

So here are the possible ideas I have for each room of my house so far. My house is a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with a dining room, living room and breakfast area. (I've given up on decorating the outside since I'm terrible with plants (unless they're weeds lol.)

--------------------------------

1. Guestroom that's an actual guestroom: this one does have a theme already, it's Assassin's Creed, specifically Assassin's Creed 2 but some of the others, too. I place my Assassin's Creed merch and my own souvenirs from the locales each game takes place in there lol. Right now, it has dark grey curtains and grey/white bedding with some weird beige/yellow accents. The ACIII flag I hung up has fallen down, but I can hang it up over the bed and have a reason to put red and blue accents back into the room, like the American flag pillow.

I want to build on the international aspect of the decor, like in the guest bathroom (see point 2). I would like to mount the painting of Venezia and finally hang it up over the table. Clean up the junk I have stored there, redrill the curtains. Maybe add a chair or stool? If I find another good Assassin's Creed artwork, I want to include that, or some other international game (Overwatch, etcetera.)

So far I did hang up (in a much stabler way) the ACIII flag over the bed and terribly stapled the Venice painting my mom gave me, but I haven't hung up the painting because I didn't have anything to use to mount it. Still need to find a few more prints or paintings that are on theme, redo the curtain rods and clean out the junk. I also want to arrange some fake flowers but not sure what will fit with the theme just yet, maybe just white and red flowers for simplicity.

2. Guest bathroom: this room has grey and white geometric patterns in the bathmats and shower curtain, and a tiny worldwide souvenir corner on the counter, which has damp-proof souvenirs from Assassin's Creed locales and related decor, like a glass apple and a Halloweeny candle that smells like "poison" or something similar. My favorite part are the apothecary "poison" glass bathroom accessories like soap dish and tumbler, which I found at Marshall's and they look so sleek and subtly threatening while being relevant to my profession.

I want to get new wall art to replace the cheapo wood plaque from Joann's (which I painted gold for some reason but it doesn't match the silver color scheme, not even sure why I did that lol), which has to be waterproof obviously, and maybe some fake plants since I can't keep real plants alive. Maybe a new tray to organize the bath supplies for guests. (I don't use this area much even before the pandemic, but my mom stays over sometimes.)

I did take out the plaque, but have nothing to replace it with at this time. I bought a grey/white embroidered hoop from Etsy to hang somewhere though I'm not sure if it's mold-proof, so it's not in the bathroom yet. Still left to buy - fake plants, a tray or organizer. Then clean up whatever I stashed in the linen closet.

And that's all for now!

I decided that since no one is following this and this isn't any particular theme like my actual blogs, I will use this to document my style transformation journey, basically type it out and hold myself accountable and organized and focused. I don't think it will work that well since I am flaky and scatter-brained, but the goal is to look back at my life choices 6 months or a year later after this post and see some visible progress. I guess I could journal this in real life to keep myself on track better, but I don't want to waste ink and paper printing out images found on the interwebs.

Anyway, after watching youtube and looking at pinterest and twitter, I decided that I didn't really want to join the current trends of cottagecore or dark academia or vintage aesthetic whatever is going on tiktok due to pandemic cabin fever. But I did want to konmari my life and develop a great, unified aesthetic style to make me smile after I get off work and have to contemplate yet another year of not seeing my friends or going to the movies or eating at restaurants because America.

My problem is that I love a lot of styles and my go-to aesthetic changes with the season or whatever's hip with my friends and the artist I follow (not my friends). So my house and wardrobe is full of random stuff that I barely use and didn't plan for and may not use again.

Furthemore, the biggest current trends out there, in all honesty, do not fit me as a Southeast Asian. They involve colors that look bad on my skintone (but which I love in theory lol, go figure): muted pastels, desaturated colors, greens and greys and yellows/oranges. They also involve a lot of layers, which I don't want to wear in Texas hell (most of the year) and also don't like wearing in general if I can avoid it. I need to invent my own aesthetic!

Finally, I want to avoid buying new bulky stuff, and try to reuse or thrift or make use of stuff I already have, or konmari and sell things that do not spark joy in order to make room for new stuff. My goal is to be eco-conscious and mindful towards other lifeforms on this planet, as ethically as we can be in this capitalist hell. I don't want to be minimalist, but I don't want to be recruited for an episode of hoarders.

First, I start off looking at my old pinterest board filled with things I know I love. My first inspiration, art noveau, a no-brainer there. I have an Alphonse Mucha print dress, and a book I bought from Half-price books of his sketches and paintings, so really emphasizing flowy, sinuous plant-like lines, making inorganic things look organic but with a lot of green (for leaves and plants) that is not my fave color judging by its lack in my wardrobe. I actually think I look all right in most shades of dark green, but I don't invest in it.

I also have a board devoted to Joan of Arc, so obviously her particular look. But I am also inspired by strong, bold geometric medieval or symbolic imagery with bright, saturated, stained glass colors. Royal blue, crimson red, gold and silver (although gold looks slightly better than silver on me, I wear both.)

I do have a board that seems to be mixed shabby chic craft rooms and lolita wardrobes. So the theme is princessy, lots of roses and pearls and diamonds in white or pastels, maybe fur and feathers for extra Rococcco opulence. This combined with grandma-chic, antique lace and weathered fabrics and painted wooden furniture, old-timey English cottage elements in natural earth tones. This is the board that least represents what I want in my house lol, but because I wear lolita, it comes up a lot. I love all of these items in my mind, but I don't want my entire house, with what is already in it, to look like an antique shop.

Now I combine all of these aesthetics with what is already in my house. The main paint and floor/tile color is white (a decent background), with some dark cherry furnishings, some bamboo furnishings, some black and white composite wood furnishings all in equal proportions. The metal fixtures are silver, but there is also some gold and rose gold items from my previous house. The stone is grey/black granite. Building off the dark cherry and granite, I bought mostly grey and white rugs. There is no real accent color anywhere except for cheap plastic from my college days which for some reason is teal and navy and whatever color of flowers I have collected (a rainbow lol).

My wardrobe is... basically the same state. Divided equally among a variety of polar opposite styles. From gothic to lolita to Japanese/Chinese styling.

I have my work cut out for me lmao.
